Stampin Up Joyful Christmas, 3D Poinsettia

Stay Tuned For The Video Tutorial

This 3D Poinsettia Flower can be used on cards as a focal point, on a head piece for a festive hair style, or glued on a jewel pin to create a Christmas broach. Let your creativity take over.

I created this 3D paper flower after being invited by Brandy Cox to be a guest Demonstrator at her annual Pinehurst Stamp Retreat. I was asked to come up with a special 3d flower to be used on one of her fabulous cards that would be featured at the event. After several hours and 3 days of creative play I was able to combine different techniques that I have learned over the years and this flower was born.

The card photographed above was created by Brandy Cox of BrandysCards, using my 3D Poinsettia as the focal image.
I hope you give it a try.

1. Wipe your embossing buddy across the vellum cardstock.
2. Ink up your images using VersaMark and stamp them on the Vellum cardstock.
Tip: You’ll need 2 large poinsettias, 1 large poinsettia that you cut the center flower out and 6 leaves.
3. Sprinkle fine detail Gold Embossing Powder over the images.
4. Use a heat tool to melt and set the gold embossing powder.
5. Free hand cut all 6 leaves, 2 large and 1 center of the poinsettia stamp that you have gold embossed.
6. Using a sponge dauber, apply your first layer of ink (Pretty in Pink) to both the top and bottom of each cut out vellum flower. You will start with the lightest color first and end with the darkest color.
7. Next, layer your mid color (Real Red) using the sponge daubers to the bottom and top of the flowers, work the ink from the middle of the flower fanning out to the ends of each petal.
Tip: Concentrate the heaviest ink coverage in the center of the flower and pull color out towards the tips leaving some light pink areas.
8. Apply the darkest ink color (Cherry Cobbler) to the top and bottom of each flower with heavy concentration of ink in the center and total coverage on the cut out smaller center flower.
Tip: In shading your ink allow the mid color to highlight the darkest color by dabbing the ink towards the ends of the flower allowing the lighter two colors to show for contrast.
9. Using a paper towel wipe the inks off of the gold emboss to help reduce the inks from bleeding when you apply the crackle paint.
10. Air dry or dry using a heat tool on the coolest setting. (Stamping Up heat tool on 1).
Tip: Be careful not to get to close to the vellum, you don’t want to burn your flowers.
11. Apply using a paint brush a thin layer of Tim Holtz Distressed Crackle Paint (Rock Candy) to the top of the flower.
Tip: Don’t Panic! The ink may bleed a little due to the gold emboss acting as a resist. It is best to apply the Crackle paint and clean the gold emboss, one flower at a time.
12. Take and clean your brush with water, dry the brush on paper towel or a rag and starting from the center in on stroke working outwards to the tip of the flower, mop the excess red off of the emboss. Repeat until the gold emboss is clean.
Tip: The flower will begin to curl, that’s what we want.
13. Air dry and apply the crackle to the next flower repeating steps 11 and 12 or us a heat tool to dry and repeat steps 11 and 12 for each flower.
14. Shape the flower petals by using your thumb and middle finger to hold each petal, using your index finger begin to rub under the petal causing a bubble or arch effect in the petal and then take to tip and curl under. You will want to shape each petal.
Tip: If you have long nails I suggest using your paint brush handle to help in the shaping process.
Do Not Use A Stylus, they will cause the vellum to tare.
15. Once the petals are shaped, pinch the tips to create a more realistic effect.
Tip: the action of pinching the tips is just like making a pretty border on the edge of a homemade piecrust.image
16. When you’re finished coloring and shaping your flowers, add a layer of crystal effects to the tops of each flower and sprinkle sparingly with dazzling diamonds glitter.
17. Air dry or heat dry on setting 1 of the Stamping Up heat tool.
18. Layer your poinsettia using stamping dimensional by offsetting the petals.
19. Once all three layers are stacked, add your embellishments, such as pearls, brads or jewels.
20. Fluff and enjoy.
21. For the leaves follow the same steps just use old olive and garden green inks to color and shade each leaf.

Card Dimensions:

1. Cut whisper white cardstock, 4 1/4 x 11 fold in half for the Card base

2. Cut a 4×4 piece of Always Artichoke cardstock, to layer on top of your base.

3. Cut a 3 3/4 x 3 3/4 piece of the textured wallpaper and layer on top of the Always Artichoke layer. To add a little sparkle, color wallpaper with a clear shimmer paint or spray with a shimmer mist.

4. Layer the wallpaper onto the green and add your ribbon tying a flat knot on the far right.

5. Now add to base and attach the 3d flower to the center panel with hot glue.

6. Stamp your sentiment and enjoy.
